WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling (also known as a Vampire Facial) is the process of utilizing a medical-grade micropen tool to create controlled damages to the skin. Controlled damages trigger a healing response in the body, which helps correct imperfections like scarring, texture, uneven tone and more.

During the microneedling process, ingredients can be introduced to the skin for even more benefits. We offer microneedling services with a choice of serum or a patients own platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

WHY PLATELET-RICH PLASMA (PRP)?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a component of blood rich in water and proteins that plays a key role in the body’s natural healing process. When introduced to the skin through microneedling, PRP stimulates collagen production and triggers a release of growth factors that increase the amount of reparative cells in the targeted area. This response is effective in improving acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, enlarged pores, unwanted texture and promotes more youthful and vibrant skin!

Microneedling can be performed on areas all over the body including: face, neck, decollete, back, buttocks, and any other areas with stretch marks, acne scarring or unwanted texture!

PATIENT EDUCATION

Microneedling is a safe and minimally invasive procedure aimed to stimulate the body’s own collagen production to reduce the appearance of fine lines, pores, wrinkles, stretch marks, skin laxity, scarring and to improve the skin’s texture and overall appearance.

Microneedling with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), also known as the Vampire Facial, is when we microneedle your face as normal, but use your body’s own growth factors as a glide. At the end of your treatment we place the remaining PRP on your face as a mask that you wear for up to 24 hours post treatment. The addition enhances the efficacy of the treatment, increases results and speeds your body’s healing process. Anyone can benefit from this treatment. It is especially beneficial to those with once scaring.

How does it work? Microneedling causes controlled micro-injuries which stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodeling of collagen and elastin. We offer Microneedling for the following areas: Face, Neck, Chest, Breast, Back, Arms, Hands, Stomach, and Upper Inner/Outer Thighs. Microneedling is safe for most skin types and all skin tones, with little downtime. Expect to experience 3-4 days of redness, tightness, and peeling until the skin heals itself to a glowing and improved surface. I typically recommend beginning with 3-4 treatments, or more, depending on the patient’s skin condition and age. After your completed series of treatments, a patient should consider maintenance treatments of 3-4 a year to continue neocollagenesis.

Discontinue the following prior to your Microneedling Appointment: Retinol, Tretinoin, Glycolic Acids, Salicylic Acids, Benzoyl Peroxide, Alpha or Beta Hydroxy Acids and Vitamin C to the treatment area for 7 days before treatment. If your skin is irritated please contact our office at least 24 hours prior to the appointment to reschedule.

  • Schedule your procedure to allow for about 3-5 days of facial redness, possibly bruising and flaking.
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding cannot be treated.

  • If you have recently used the medication Accutane, it is recommended to postpone treatment until at least 12 months after stopping the medication.
  • Please inform your Provider of all previous treatments, medical conditions, medications you are taking, skin disorders, allergies, history of anaphylaxis, and any other medical problems.
  • If you have an active cold sore/fever blister, canker sore or shingles you will need to postpone treatment. If you are prone to developing cold sores/fever blisters or shingles, please contact us 1 week before treatment for recommendations.
  • Tylenol will not increase the chance of bruising and is preferred for the week prior to treatment. To help with possible discomfort, you may take Tylenol one hour prior to your scheduled appointment. Do not take more than 3000mg of Tylenol in a 24-hour period.

  • Avoid spray tanning prior to your appointment as the treatment will remove the tan.
  • Microneedling cannot be completed over compromised skin. If you have open sores, blemishes or a sunburn the appointment will need to be rescheduled.

AFTER YOUR TREATMENT

  • Day 1: Your skin will appear red, swollen and feel sunburned today. It will begin to feel tight. You may also experience itching or mild burning. You can help to alleviate this sensation by taking Benadryl or Zyrtec (for itching) and Tylenol (for discomfort) as needed, unless otherwise directed by your medical provider. Do not wash your face. You may apply Cerave moisturizer for the rest of today. Avoid wearing makeup, the gym and sun exposure.
  • Day 2: Your skin will continue to feel very tight and dry. The top layers of the skin are dehydrating. You will look like you have an uneven sunburn/tan with possible bruising. This is expected and normal. Rinse your face with cool or tepid water, and only use your fingertips. Start to use a gentle cleanser and continue Cerave moisturizer today. Do not use any abrasive or exfoliating products. Continue to avoid wearing makeup and sun exposure. You may go to the gym.
  • Day 3: On day 3 or before most reddening of the skin will be resolved. Continue to use a gentle cleanser and continue to use Cerave moisturizer during this time period. Continue to avoid the sun during this time. You may apply makeup and SPF today.
  • Day 4: You may or may not start peeling and if you do you will on this day. Some people do not peel at all after Microneedling and it is ok if you do and it is ok if you do not. If this occurs do not pull or pick at peeling skin as it can result in hyperpigmentation or scaring. Continue with cleansing, moisturizing and SPF. Avoid the sun during this time.
  • Day 5-6: You may exfoliate the skin with a gentle scrub to remove any remaining skin that has not peeled. Continue to avoid sun exposure for the next two weeks. Begin your normal skin care products
  • Day 7: Consider a Dermaplane or microdermabrasion to remove any remaining dry and peeling skin for an extra glow.

MICRONEEDLING FAQ

During your consultation, Dr. Conrardy or a member of his experienced team will evaluate your skin and then develop your unique treatment plan. From there, they will go over your costs and what to expect during the procedure. White Pearl Med Spa often offers discounts on treatment packages, so ask about current deals during your consultation.

Also known as collagen induction therapy, microneedling is a nonsurgical procedure to improve the health of your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps keep your skin supple, smooth, and tight. Over time, your natural supply of collagen is depleted and your skin gets less elastic and thin. Microneedling causes tiny wounds on your skin. These micro-injuries cause your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, your complexion is firmer, brighter, and healthier.

In the process of microneedling, channels are made that make it easier for treatments to reach the lower layers. That’s why microneedling is often combined before other skin treatments, like vitamin-rich serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma). Microneedling plus PRP is often called the Vampire Facial®. During your consultation, we will explain what treatments would enhance your microneedling and which best fit your skin goals.

Usually, patients need 3 – 6 microneedling treatments to achieve their best results. However, how many treatments you require will depend on the condition of your skin and your goals. Microneedling can be safely done every 4 – 6 weeks. During your consultation, Dr. Conrardy can estimate the number of sessions you will want based on your skin and goals. When your skin goals are reached, Dr. Conrardy suggests getting maintenance treatments every six months.

In general, microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are usually no side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be performed on most skin areas, including the arms, face, neck, thighs, chest, and lower legs. Microneedling isn’t recommended if you have taken Accutane in the last few months, as well as if you have herpes simplex, an open wound, or an active skin infection. In addition, you might not be able to get microneedling if you’re pregnant, nursing, or getting radiation treatments.
